A History of Ingenuity and Care
How Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Took Root in Ghana
Explore the people, institutions and advances that brought complex surgical care closer to patients across Ghana.
From Urgent Need to Local Expertise
As Ghana’s health services expanded after independence, surgeons faced a growing need to treat chest injuries, congenital heart conditions and diseases of the blood vessels. Procedures requiring specialised teams, equipment and postoperative care were often beyond the reach of local hospitals, and many patients had to seek treatment abroad. The development of specialist training and dedicated facilities helped turn those challenges into the foundations of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery in Ghana.
